Working Group 3-Digital Earth Governance and Ethics of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) recently published a commentary in the journal Big Data & Society explaining how the notion of Digital Earth is well-suited to highlight current key dilemmas and issues in AI ethics and data governance. These issues include how to implement AI ethics guidelines in practice in different cultures, and how to generate public value from data and steward it in the interests of marginalized communities.
The implementation of ethical AI and inclusive data governance in Digital Earth has a strong local dimension. As the commentary discusses, there are global-local frictions embedded in the concept of Digital Earth in the way that it is intended as a wide-ranging platform for collaboration across governments, non-governmental actors, and cultures, while also being multi-layered and embedded in different local contexts.
With this local dimension and challenges for implementation in mind, Working Group 3 has now launched an online survey to collect use-cases of how AI ethics principles and data governance approaches have been implemented in different contexts. The results of this survey are aimed to feed into fair implementations of Digital Earth applications.
If you care about these issues please take a look at the commentary, fill in the survey with your examples, and help to disseminate both the commentary and survey!
