On May 26, 2023, the Launch Ceremony of the International Society for Digital Earth - Young Scientist Innovation Network (ISDE-YSIN) and the 1st Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation were successfully held online. More than 120 delegates of scientists, technologists, educationists and environmentalists attended the Ceremony and the Lecture, who were from countries worldwide including the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany and China etc.
At the Launch Ceremony, Prof. Huadong Guo, Honorary President of International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and Director General of International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), Dr. Alessandro Annoni, President of ISDE, and Prof. Michael Goodchild from the University of California, Santa Barbara delivered welcoming remarks.
Dr. Zhen Liu, Executive Director of ISDE, introduced the International Society for Digital Earth, and Prof. Min Chen, Chair of ISDE-YSIN, briefed the participants on the mission, structure, and scheduled activities of, as well as future plans for the Young Scientist Innovation Network.
In the introduction to ISDE-YSIN, Prof. Min Chen emphasized that the goal of the YSIN is to unite young scientists, support their academic research and promote innovation and development in the field of Digital Earth through organizing international academic events with young scientist involved. In his opinion, the ISDE-YSIN will serve as a powerful platform to encourage young scientists to contribute to earth observation, big earth data, sustainable development and many other related programs. Prof. Min Chen at last announced that the 1st Youth Innovation Forum on Digital Earth will be held physically in Beijing, China on August 22-23, 2023.
The Launch Ceremony was moderated by Prof. Hui Lin from Jiangxi Normal University, who is also the Council member of ISDE.
The 1st Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation was held straight afterwards. Prof. Josef Strobl from the University of Salzburg started the Lecture with a presentation entitled “Digital Earth – Connecting Citizens”, attaching great importance to the citizen engagement in Digital Earth. Prof. Elif Sertel from the Istanbul Technical University delivered a lecture on “Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Using Machine Learning and Deep Learning Methods”, while Dr. Fan Zhang from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology enlightened the audience with a lecture themed “Uncovering Hidden City Profiles with Street-Level Imagery”, the two of them both showcasing the application of imagery and mapping.
The 1st Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation was moderated by Dr. Jian Lin, Secretary of ISDE-YSIN, and aroused the great interest of the audience. The Lecture series on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation was launched henceforward, which is planned to be held regularly online.
