The International Science Council (ISC) reviewed the year of 2022 in tackling complex global challenges through knowledge-driven solutions and the powerful global voice of science, and released the 2022 Annual Report "Science for a Changing World".
There are some highlights to offer a glimpse of the ISC activities and achievements:
In 2022, amidst the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, growing economic disparities, and record-breaking temperatures, we continued to bring the world together through the power of science.
Emphasizing the importance of scientific cooperation in the face global challenges, we swiftly responded to the war in Ukraine and the pandemic, creating networks, providing support, resources, and critical policy recommendations.
Our engagement with the UN reached new heights. We prioritized science in global decision-making through the signature of several key cooperation agreements and the establishment of focal point in New York – milestones that paved the way to the recent launch of the UN Group of Friends of Science for Action.
To deepen and strengthen our global membership, we welcomed young academies and associations, inaugurated the Global Knowledge Dialogue series in South Africa and established regional focal points in Latin America and the Caribbean with the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences; and Asia and the Pacific, with the Australian Academy of Science, whilst forging a partnership with Future Africa to explore options for engagement on the African continent.
Our commitment to developing sustainable science systems remained steadfast through the Global Commission on Science Missions for Sustainability, with a ground-breaking report unveiling a new scientific approach for achieving the 2030 Agenda to be presented next month, at the upcoming High-Level Political Forum.
Underpinning all of the Council's work remains our Members, who together allow the Council to convene and catalyze the scientific community to advance our common goals, meet the challenges that humanity and our planet face in the 21st century, and harness the global voice of science.
