The 1st Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation was given on May 26, 2023, 20:40 - 21:50 (UTC+8). Three speakers were invited to give speeches on the citizen engagement in Digital Earth, the application of machine learning and deep learning methods to the land mapping, and the city street view imagery.

Short Bio of Invited Speakers:

Josef Strobl

University of Salzburg, Austria

Dr. Josef Strobl is a Professor at the University of Salzburg, leading its Centre for Geoinformatics and the GIScience Institute, Austrian Academy of Science. He holds degrees in Geography from Vienna University and has been teaching GIScience and related subjects at universities worldwide. He is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, serving as a board member for international organizations like GSDI and GISIG and on the editorial boards of leading journals in Geoinformatics and GIScience. As president of the Austrian Umbrella Organization for Geographic Information (AGEO), he has been and still is promoting and spearheading various SDI-related initiatives.

Elif Sertel

Istanbul Technical University, Turkey

Dr. Elif Sertel is a Professor at Geomatics Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University. She is the first Geomatics Engineer selected for Fulbright scholarship in Turkey. She investigated impact of land cover change especially due to the urbanization on regional climate in her PhD study. Dr. Sertel became an Assistant Professor at Istanbul Technical University in July 2009. She was entitled as Associate Professor in April 2010 and Professor in March 2016. Dr. Sertel received Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2017 and TUBITAK Incentive Award in Engineering from TUBITAK (The Scientific & Research Council of Turkey) in 2021.

Fan Zhang

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, China

Dr Fan Zhangis an Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr Zhang was formerly a Senior Research Fellow at MIT and the lead of the Urban Visual AI group at the MIT Senseable City Lab. His research lies at the intersection of GIScience, Geospatial Data Science, and Computer Vision. Dr Zhang is currently an associate editor of Transactions in Urban Data, Science, and Technology, a guest editor of ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and a reviewer for over 40 SCI journals in GIS and Remote Sensing. He was included in the Stanford's list of world's top 2% scientists in 2022. He was recognized as Geospatial World 50 Rising Stars in 2022 and received the Global Young Scientist Award in Frontier Science and Technology at WGDC 2020.

Jian Lin

Chinese University of Hong Kong, China

Dr Jian Linis a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of California Merced. Dr Lin obtained his PhD degree in Environmental Science from the State University of New York. His research focuses on urban forest modeling and ecosystem service quantification, and nature-based solutions for sustainable cities. In the past five years, he has published 18 papers in top SCI/SSCI journals including Nature Energy, and led or participated in the projects funded by the California Air Resources Board, the California Strategic Growth Council, and the United States Department of Agriculture. In addition, he is the Secretary of the ISDE Young Scientist Innovation Network and the Assistant Editor of the international journal Computational Urban Science.
