To benefit society by promoting the development and realization of Digital Earth
International Society for Digital Earth is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of our Founding Councilor, Former Executive Board Member and Life Member, Dr Peter Woodgate, on Friday, 23 December 2022. Dr Peter Woodgate was a worldwide recognized leader in geospatial sciences. During his professional career, he obtained several outstanding recognitions; Chair of Smart Sat CRC, Chair of the Steering Committee for the 2030 Space and Spatial Industries Growth Roadmap, member of the Australian Space Agency's Space Industry Leaders Forum, a Board member of the Public Sector Mapping Agency Ltd, Chair of the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network and Chair of Cantera Discovery LTD (a national cancer therapeutics research organization).
Within ISDE, Dr Peter Woodgate was a continuous supporter of promoting the development of the Digital Earth concept.
ISDE considers itself extremely lucky because its excellent professional expertise of Peter crossed the path of ISDE. Since then, his valuable and highly appreciated advice has guided the development of ISDE.
Peter's passion for digital earth and spatial technologies was contagious, and he was always eager to share his knowledge with others. His dedication to advancing research agendas in the spatial and space industries was evident in everything he did. Peter was also a keen champion for the Digital Earth vision paper published in PNAS. He was great at bringing people together to collaborate around achieving a vision. Some of his notable works on Digital earth had an enduring impact on ISDE development: 1) Spatially enabling Australia – the next decade; 2) Digital Earth 2020: towards the vision for the next decade; 3) Advancing Digital Earth: beyond the next generation; and 4) Next-generation Digital Earth.
