ISDE International Lectures, organized by the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) are a series of online events which feature invited lectures by well-known international experts in the field of Digital Earth. The event will invite speakers to give lectures every two months. The purpose of the events is to bring international scholars in the relevant research fields of Digital Earth together to exchange academic perspectives, share research results, and disseminate the most cutting-edge and authoritative concept of Digital Earth.

The 14th ISDE International Lectures

The 14th ISDE International Lectures, with the theme of “Harnessing the Power of Generative AI in GIScience”, will invite three speakers to explore diverse viewpoints on the applications of Generative AI in research related to sense of place, autonomous spatial agents, and the broader field of GIScience. Researchers and scholars whose work aligns with these topics are encouraged to submit their research and manuscripts to the Special Issue of the International Journal of Digital Earth, which focuses on the same theme.

Yuhao Kang

University of Texas at Austin, USA

Dr. Yuhao Kang is an assistant professor, leading the GISense Lab at the University of Texas at Austin. He was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He had working experience at the University of South Carolina, Google X and MoBike. Dr. Kang’s research mainly focuses on Human-centered Geospatial Data Science, including understanding human subjective experience at place and developing ethical and responsible geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) approaches. By leveraging human-centered geospatial data science, Dr. Kang’s work has benefited various applications in public health, real estate, crime, and urban planning. Dr. Kang has actively contributed to the GIScience community. He founded the non-profit global education project GISphere with over 20,000 members to promote GIScience education.

Yingjie Hu

University at Buffalo, USA

Dr. Yingjie Hu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University at Buffalo (UB). He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, a Faculty Member of the UB Center for Geological and Climate Hazards, and an Affiliate Professor of the AI and Data Science Institute. His major research area is in GIScience and GeoAI. He is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed articles in top journals and conferences. He and his work have been recognized by awards such as the UCGIS Early/Mid-Career Research Award and the AAG SAM Emerging Scholar Award. His research has received over $1.5 million in funding support from agencies such as the NSF and NASA, and has also been covered by major media such as CNN, NPR, and Reuters. He is passionate about doing GIScience research, training the next generation's GIS leaders, and serving communities.

Zhenlong Li

The Pennsylvania State University, USA

Dr. Zhenlong Li is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the Pennsylvania State University, where he leads the Geoinformation and Big Data Research Laboratory (GIBD). Dr. Li is a broadly trained GIScientist with research focusing on geospatial big data analytics, spatial computing, and geospatial AI. By developing and synthesizing advanced geospatial methods and computing technologies, his research aims to advance knowledge discovery and decision making to address a broad range of geographic questions about hazards, public health, population mobility, environment and climate change. Through his teaching and advising, Dr. Li seeks to equip the next generation of GIScientists and geographers with strong problem-solving skills through the integration of spatial thinking and computational thinking. Dr. Li’s contributions to research, teaching, and service have earned him various awards. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), a recipient of the 2020 Breakthrough Star Award at USC, and was named one of the Geospatial World 50 Rising Stars by Geospatial Media and Communications in 2021.
