On May 28th, the 4th ISDE Academic Salon was successfully held at Beijing Normal University, China. This salon, with the theme of "Automated Generation of 3D Building Models for Applications in SDGs", was organized by the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and the Beijing Normal University.
This salon featured Prof. Hongchao Fan from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). By illustrating some city models of Norway, Prof. Fan explained the concepts and applications of 3D city modelling, and shared his views on the AI algorithms and deep learning technology. He also introduced VGI3D, an interactive platform that combines geographic data from many sources, and put forward the prospect of realizing 3D modelling of buildings on a global scale, which aroused warm responses from the participants. The salon was moderated by Prof. Liqiang Zhang from the Department of Geography, Beijing Normal University.
Presentation by Prof. Hongchao Fan
Prof. Fan's main research interests include 3D city modeling, photogrammetry, and laser scanning. He previously worked as the Group Leader for 3D Data Infrastructure at the Heidelberg University in Germany, and a professor at Wuhan University. He is currently Associate Editor of the Geo-spatial Information Science and Big Earth Data, and Editorial Board members of several SCI journals.
The 4th ISDE academic salon built upon the previous successful examples since the 1st salon was inaugurated on November 20, 2023. With the aim of further enriching the ISDE academic matrix, the salon series will continue to be held as a vibrant exchange among universities and institutions.
