The report on Big Earth Data in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals (2020) was released on September 26, 2020 by the Chinese government at a video-conference on Poverty Eradication and South-South Cooperation, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

The report focuses on six SDGs including Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Climate Action (SDG 13), Life below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). The case studies present the use of Big Earth Data for developing data products, new evaluation methodologies and models to monitor progress and inform policy-making at local, national, regional, and global scales.

Prof. Huadong Guo, the chief scientist of Big Earth Data Science Engineering Project (CASEarth) pointed out that the SDGs’ global indicator system, as a voluntary non-binding evaluation index for UN member states, had been still in continuous improvement. "It has become urgent and challenging to clarify the internal relationship within the SDG indicator systems, to put forward objective and effective monitoring index and evaluation models, and to improve the technical methods and index frameworks ", he emphasized.
